You, too, can be a Mobile Syncer

There are a ton of applications available for syncing, one being the Sync Center within Vista. For me, though, I've found FolderShare to be the most seamless sync service available. FolderShare is a Windows Live web service that keeps multiple devices in sync across the Internet using a small satellite application installed on each device that stays in communication with the FolderShare web service. As files get modified on either device, FolderShare syncs them.

    sync

I've been using FolderShare on and off for a year and a half now, and consider it an essential mobility application. Best of all, FolderShare is currently free. FolderShare is available for both Windows and Mac OS X clients.

Using the web application, you set up all devices that need to be kept in sync and then configure each of the folders that you wish to keep in sync. You can have up to 10 FolderShare libraries, with each library containing up to 10,000 files.

In addition to being able to keep devices in sync across the Internet, the FolderShare web application allows you to access your files from devices that are currently on line. Imagine you are at a client site and you forgot your mobile computer. Your client wants to sign that big contract you've been talking about, but you don't have it with you. All is not lost. By simply logging on to FolderShare.com, you can connect to your computer back at the office and download that contract. Problem solved. Contract signed. Money in the bank. Spouse is happy.

If you own more than one device and need to keep your files in sync while mobile, I highly encourage you to check out Foldershare.

    Globalization in Action

I'm not sure what's scarier, the AK-47 she's holding or the iPod's invasion of all corners of the globe. Actually, my real question is: Would it be possible to replace the lip plate with a speaker? – Matt Buchanan

    Intel-Packing iMac Makes $402 iProfit?

    imac.jpg
Jaws dropped when we found out the Xbox 360 was practically being given away, selling for a price that was less than the sum of its parts. That’s not happening with the new dual core Intel iMac, according to analyst firm iSuppli. These guys took one of the new iMacs and dismantled it, put together a parts list and added it all up. Their conclusion? That $1,300 dual core iMac has $898 worth of parts inside. Of course, that doesn’t include the mouse or keyboard, the software, or all the work it takes to put together one of those machines. The iSuppli analysts estimated the 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 processor inside cost about $265, and other parts making up the Intel south bridge and north bridge chipsets cost about $45 altogether. The ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card probably added about $30 to the cost, according to the analysts.

I would assume, though, that ace negotiator Steve Jobs is probably paying much less than anybody else ever will for every item on that entire parts list. Must be nice. The guy should write a book about how to be a ballbuster at the negotiating table. He’ll have no time for book writing, though—he may be too busy running Disney.

Xbox 360 costs $715 to make

Earlier numbers by Business Week may have reported that Microsoft is losing $126 on every Xbox 360 sold. That figure is now believed to be a bit higher by some. According to Insider Scoop, the world's largest software maker is losing upwards of $300 per console sold. From the article: "A high ranking friend at IBM, one that worked on the Xbox 360 chip design, tipped us regarding the real expenses involved in manufacturing the Xbox 360... 'It costs Microsoft approximately $715 to make, the manufacturing costs are still too high, another reason why they’re producing relatively small quantities.'”

    $100 Laptop a Reality

Though they’ve been bouncing the idea of a $100 laptop around for a while ($100 Laptop - No Child Left Behind), it looks like it’s finally becoming a reality. The lime green laptop is about the size of a text book and with a hand crank to allow it to operate without electricity. Designed at the MIT Media Lab, the project mainly aimed at developing countries where a calculator and Internet access can mean the difference between starvation and a good year. The goal is to allow these kids and even adults to actually own the laptops, though governments or charities will pay for them.

Looks like Brazil, Thailand, Egypt and Nigeria are the choices for the first wave of laptops early next year and each is slated to buy at least a million of them. Though not in production yet, one unnamed company has offered to build them fro $110 each and four others are considering joining the effort. They operate at about half the speed of store-bought laptops and will run on an open-source OS. The screen is actually from a portable DVD player and can be viewed in either color or black and white.

Your $200 iPod NANO costs about $90 to make

    nano dissected

Check out how much money a device costs in parts (and manufacturing) to produce; this time it’s iSuppli estimating the cost of goods in making a 2GB nano. And what figure did they happen come up with? $90.18. Yes, I know the retail on that thing is $200. Granted, they could be way off, but by their calculations you’re paying a huge portion of that ninety bucks on the integrated circuits, screen, wheel, and flash memory. It’s important to point out that iSuppli’s figure does not include Apple’s cost of business (marketing, operating their dozens of storefronts, employing tens of thousands globally, etc.), however, which they conservatively estimate as being anywhere from 15-20% of the unit’s cost, a figure that just doesn’t seem quite right to these ears. Then again, a 40% ($80) margin on the nano wouldn’t exactly surprise me, either. Maybe I'm in the wrong business after all.

    Jason Sui’s N3-B Kidrobot Speakers

Jason Sui has designed a unique looking speaker box that could definitely add some flair to any home theatre system. This speaker box, named N3-B Kidrobot, looks like a penguin wearing an oversized jacket, which is actually what they used to say about me in high school. The N3-B houses three speakers up to 150 watts.

    DJ Turntable Furniture

DUAL Furniture’s floating coffins are suspended to avoid rumble, though you’re more likely to put them in your home because they look cool. You should be able to mount it properly for stability, but if you want your decks more grounded, the alien-pod DJ Kreemy Table (street just under $3000) was good enough for a Queer Eye episode.
